Frustrated residents of the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality in Zeerust have accused the North West Department of Public Works and Roads of failing to monitor contractors, leading to incomplete and substandard road projects worth millions.
Two major projects—the R63 million P48 road and another exceeding R134 million—remain unfinished despite their respective February and December 2023 completion deadlines. Locals claim contractors abandon sites after receiving payment, leaving behind hazardous conditions and unused materials.
Community Outcry Over Neglect
Residents highlighted multiple issues, including:
-
Lack of safety signage, putting motorists at risk.
-
Unfulfilled promises to subcontract local businesses, denying communities economic benefits.
-
Substandard workmanship and prolonged delays without explanation.
A pensioner and taxpayer expressed frustration: “It’s heartbreaking… I’ve paid a lot of tax, invested in government, yet we get nothing. Driving on these roads at night is dangerous.” Another resident cited wet, unmarked roads as a daily hazard.
Department Admits Delays, Residents Demand Accountability
The department acknowledged project delays, citing budgetary and contractual consequences. However, critics argue the lack of consequence management enables wasteful spending.
“There are implications… from the contractor side,” a official stated, but residents insist stronger oversight is needed.
With roads deteriorating and funds seemingly mismanaged, the community urges immediate intervention to hold contractors and officials accountable.
