South African surfing star Jordy Smith has taken a major step toward securing his maiden World Surf League (WSL) championship after winning the Western Australia Margaret River Pro near Perth. The 37-year-old from Durban defeated American Griffin Colapinto in the final, securing his second Tour victory of the season and solidifying his place atop the WSL rankings.

Smith delivered a dominant performance in the final, opening with an 8.5 ride that showcased his signature blend of power and precision. The wave set the tone for the heat, leaving Colapinto struggling to find a response. The American managed only an early 4.83 before being held scoreless for the remainder of the final, unable to secure a second scoring wave.

The victory marks another milestone in Smith’s storied career, which includes two previous runner-up finishes in the WSL standings. Now wearing the coveted Leader’s Yellow Jersey, he heads to the next event at Trestles, Southern California—a venue where he has triumphed twice before (2014 and 2016).

Reflecting on his win, Smith credited his team and family for their unwavering support. “It feels incredible,” he said. “It’s a testament to showing up every day, trusting the process, and having an amazing group behind me—my coaches, my wife, my family. There’s so much dedication that goes into this, and for me this year, it’s about having fun and enjoying it because it’s not forever.”

Following the Trestles stop, Smith will return to familiar territory at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, where he has also claimed two previous victories. With momentum on his side, the veteran surfer appears poised for a career-defining season as he chases his long-awaited world title.

The WSL Championship Tour now shifts to California, with Smith leading the pack as the hunt for the 2025 crown heats up.
