Sharks captain Eben Etzebeth believes his team has finally cracked the code in the United Rugby Championship (URC), just in time for their knockout showdown against Munster this Saturday at Kings Park.
After struggling in previous seasons, the Sharks have turned a corner, learning how to win tight matches—a crucial factor in playoff rugby. Etzebeth acknowledged that last season’s disappointing mid-table finish (12th or 13th) came down to narrow losses, but this campaign has seen a reversal of fortunes.
“This year, we’re actually winning those close games, and that’s the difference,” said the Springbok lock. “A couple of points change everything, and now we’re in a home quarterfinal.”
A Battle of Small Margins
Facing 2023 champions Munster, Etzebeth expects a tight, physical contest that could hinge on discipline and goalkicking.
“It’s probably going to come down to who has the better goal-kicker on the day,” he said. “Munster are a quality side, used to playoff success—they’ve won knockout games away from home before.”
Indeed, Munster’s pedigree is undeniable. Two seasons ago, they claimed the URC title after winning three consecutive away knockout matches, including the final. This season, they also stunned European giants Leinster in the Champions Cup, proving their big-game mentality.
Home Advantage a Key Factor
For the Sharks, this marks their first-ever home quarterfinal in the URC—a significant milestone after finishing third in the standings, behind only Leinster and the Bulls.
“It’s one of our best URC campaigns yet,” Etzebeth noted. “But whatever we did before now doesn’t count. Playoffs are a different beast.”
The Sharks head into the match in strong form, having won four straight games, including impressive away victories over Edinburgh and Ulster. However, Munster’s playoff experience makes them a dangerous opponent.
The Stakes
A win would not only keep the Sharks’ title hopes alive but also secure a home semifinal—a massive advantage in their quest for a maiden URC trophy.
With both teams battle-hardened and hungry, Saturday’s clash promises to be a nail-biting encounter, where composure under pressure could decide who advances.
Kickoff at Kings Park is set for Saturday at 3 PM local time.
