The annual Slave Route Challenge, set for 1 June 2025, will once again transform Cape Town’s streets into a moving tribute to the city’s painful past and resilient spirit.
Organised by Ithuba Sports, the event features a half-marathon (7:00 AM), 10K race and Big Walk (7:30 AM), and a 5K fun run (7:40 AM), all starting at the Grand Parade on Darling Street. Runners will pass historic landmarks including District Six, the Castle of Good Hope, and the Company’s Garden, where cultural performers and traditional treats will line the route.
“This isn’t just a race – it’s a storytelling journey through pain, pride, and perseverance,” said event organisers. The route symbolises the reclamation of spaces from which communities were forcibly removed during apartheid.
Entries are now open at slaveroute.co.za. With its powerful blend of sport and heritage, the event has become a must-attend for Capetonians honouring their shared history.
