
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Nelson Mandela Bay has reaffirmed its commitment to combating crime and removing illegal firearms from the streets to ensure community safety.
In a successful joint operation on Friday, 23 May 2025, the Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combatting Unit and the Provincial Crime Intelligence Unit apprehended two suspects and confiscated five illegal firearms. The operation took place at approximately 19:30 on Thekwene Street in Chris Hani, Kwanobuhle, following actionable intelligence.
Police tactically approached a residence and conducted a search, leading to the arrest of two suspects, aged 20 and 27. The following items were seized during the operation:

1 x 9mm Parabellum firearm with 15 rounds of ammunition

1 x 9mm Norinco firearm with 8 rounds of ammunition

1 x 9mm Norinco Star with 8 rounds of ammunition

1 x Girsen 9mm with 13 rounds of ammunition

1 x Glock 9mm with 13 rounds of ammunition
All recovered firearms had their serial numbers removed. Additionally, five damaged cell phones were confiscated.
The suspects face charges of unlawful possession of prohibited firearms and unlawful possession of live ammunition. Detectives are investigating possible links between the suspects and other criminal cases in the Nelson Mandela Bay District.
The accused are expected to appear in the Kwanobuhle Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 May 2025.
