A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly making threats against South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Cape Town’s executive mayor, and local business officials. The suspect was apprehended in Germiston, Gauteng, on Friday, May 23, and is currently being transported to Cape Town, where he is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The arrest follows a case reported earlier this month on May 12, in which the CEO of a Cape Town-based company allegedly received a threatening voice message from the suspect. The message reportedly included threats against the president. Authorities also allege that the suspect sent multiple intimidating messages targeting the complainant, her family, and the mayor of Cape Town.
The suspect faces a charge of intimidation, and an investigation is ongoing. Police have not yet disclosed further details about the nature of the threats or a possible motive.
This incident has raised concerns over the safety of public officials and business leaders, with authorities reiterating that threats of this nature are taken seriously.
