
Residents of Ipelegeng township near Schweizer-Reneke are living in fear following a recent surge in gang-related violence, which has already claimed the life of a 19-year-old and led to multiple arrests.
According to police reports, the victim was found with a stab wound in what is believed to be a gang-related attack. Authorities have since arrested three individuals linked to various crimes, including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property, and house robbery. The suspects, aged 26 and 28, are expected to appear in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate’s Court on Friday, May 23.
Local Community Policing Forum (CPF) members have expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, particularly as young gang members terrorize the community. During patrols, CPF teams have reportedly recovered dangerous weapons from alleged gang affiliates.
“The community is living in fear,” said a CPF representative, who emphasized their commitment to maintaining order while allowing police to conduct their investigations.
The clashes between rival gangs have heightened tensions in the area, with residents calling for urgent intervention to curb the violence. Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing, but many remain anxious as the situation unfolds.
