
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reported significant successes in its high-density Operation Shanela, targeting illegal firearms, undocumented migrants, and various criminal activities across Limpopo. From 12 to 18 May 2025, the operation led to 1,392 arrests, reinforcing law enforcement efforts to curb violent crime and enhance community safety.
Firearms and Ammunition Seized
In a focused drive to reduce violent crime, police confiscated six illegal firearms along with large quantities of ammunition. The seizure is part of SAPS’ ongoing strategy to disarm criminals and prevent firearm-related violence.
Immigration Compliance Crackdown
A major component of the operation involved enforcing immigration laws, resulting in the arrest of 259 undocumented foreign nationals. This aligns with broader SAPS initiatives to strengthen border security and maintain law enforcement visibility in communities.
Notable Arrests Across Crime Categories
Beyond firearms and immigration violations, Operation Shanela led to arrests for a wide range of serious offenses, including:

The operation also disrupted illicit trade networks, recovering:

787,055 ml of illegal liquor (with 43 arrests for illegal liquor trading)

Various narcotics, including dagga, crack cocaine, crystal meth, heroin, and nyaope

48 dangerous weapons

8 stolen or hijacked vehicles
High-Impact Policing Actions
The operation’s success was driven by rigorous enforcement measures, including:

7,626 stop-and-search operations

106 roadblocks across the province
-
1,113 inspections of spaza shops and tuck shops

2,976 liquor outlet checks, leading to the closure of 50 illegal shebeens
Suspects Appearing in Court
Those arrested have begun appearing in local magistrates’ courts to face prosecution.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies. She emphasized that Operation Shanela is delivering tangible results in addressing safety concerns for residents, visitors, and the business community in Limpopo.
