Disaster management officials in the Western Cape are on high alert as a Level 2 weather warning has been issued for parts of the province, with two cold fronts expected to make landfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Cape Town Weather Office has reported light rainfall across the Cape Metropole, which will precede the incoming cold fronts. Authorities warn that the weather system could bring heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves along the entire Western Cape coastline.
Potential Risks and Preparedness
Colin Deiner, head of the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre, highlighted concerns over vulnerable areas, particularly informal settlements and regions previously affected by flooding.
“We’ve seen severe flooding in the last two years, with five major flood events,” Deiner said. “Areas that are still recovering from past damage remain at risk, especially with rain-on-rain events exacerbating existing vulnerabilities.”
Infrastructure, including roads and electricity pylons, has suffered significant damage in recent years. While repairs are underway, Deiner cautioned that further rainfall could worsen conditions in already affected zones.
Drier Winter Forecast: Pros and Cons
Despite the current warnings, forecasts suggest a drier winter ahead. While this may reduce flood risks, it raises concerns about prolonged fire seasons and potential water shortages.
“We’re not yet in a drought situation, but we’ll be monitoring dam levels closely,” Deiner stated. “Warmer winters can be beneficial, but continuous rain in recent years has made recovery efforts difficult.”
