The City of Cape Town has embarked on a massive infrastructure project to expand the MyCiti bus network, with new interchanges under construction across the Cape Flats. The initiative aims to provide more affordable and efficient transport for residents in areas such as Hanover Park, Philippi, and Mitchells Plain.

Multi-Billion Rand Investment

The city has allocated over R7 billion for the transport infrastructure upgrades, with a key portion of R620 million dedicated to the newly commenced Claremont interchange. According to officials, nearly all components of the project are already under construction, with the final phase set to begin soon.

“This is a massive project, and it will roll out over the next 20 months,” a city representative stated. The broader infrastructure program, valued at more than R100 billion, underscores the city’s commitment to improving mobility and economic opportunities for residents.

Targeting High-Demand Corridors

The southeast corridor, identified as one of the most densely populated and economically vulnerable areas in Cape Town, stands to benefit significantly from the expansion. The new MyCiti trunk route is expected to alleviate transport challenges for thousands of daily commuters.

“Having the MyCiti trunk route will bring relief to many commuters in this corridor,” the city emphasized.

Completion Set for 2027

The entire project is scheduled for completion by June 2027, marking a major milestone in Cape Town’s public transport development. Once operational, the expanded network is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce travel costs, and stimulate local economic growth.
