The 25th annual Africa Rail Conference commenced today at the Sandton Convention Center, bringing together over 5,000 delegates, including rail operators, government officials, and investors, to collaborate on advancing the continent’s rail sector.
With the theme of integration and innovation, the conference aims to address long-standing challenges such as aging infrastructure, vandalism, and inefficiencies that have hindered Africa’s rail potential. Notably, the continent currently contributes only 2% of global rail traffic, a figure stakeholders hope to improve through strategic partnerships and technological advancements.
South Africa’s Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, delivered a keynote address alongside delegates from Liberia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and other African nations. Discussions emphasized the role of rail as a catalyst for economic growth and the need for public-private collaboration to revitalize infrastructure.
The urgency was highlighted of modernization, quoting industry leaders who stressed that “rail is gold” for Africa’s development.
The two-day conference will continue with panel discussions and exhibitions showcasing innovations in rail technology, as delegates work toward actionable strategies to transform Africa’s rail networks.
