Authorities were forced to completely shut down the N1 South before the Maraisburg off-ramp yesterday following a collision between two trucks, one of which spilled a significant amount of diesel onto the roadway.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed the incident, stating that emergency personnel were dispatched to contain the spill and clear the scene to prevent further accidents. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes while cleanup operations were underway.
Road Reopened After Cleanup
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla provided an update, confirming that all lanes have since been reopened. “The freeway was closed for several hours, but traffic has been flowing again for the past 30 to 45 minutes,” said Fihla.
Minor Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. However, three individuals—a driver and passenger from one truck and a passenger from the other—sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for observation.
Cause of Collision Under Investigation
Fihla noted that the cause of the crash has not yet been determined. “An accident report is being compiled, and further investigations will determine fault,” he said.
Authorities urge drivers to remain cautious in the area as residual cleanup may still be in progress. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
