South Africa’s stubbornly high unemployment rate is set to come under scrutiny again as Statistics South Africa prepares to release the first-quarter labor force survey this week. Analysts anticipate slower job growth following modest gains in the third and fourth quarters of 2024.

Professor Trevor Ngwane from the University of Johannesburg highlighted concerns over the labor market’s volatility, noting that fluctuations in employment figures remain minimal compared to the country’s staggering unemployment rate, which exceeds 30%—or nearly 50% under the expanded definition. “The changes are tiny, showing no real progress,” he said. “Given the scale of joblessness, we should see consistent growth, not these ups and downs.”

With over 13 million South Africans unemployed, Ngwane warned of a deepening social and political crisis if job creation efforts fail. He criticized the government’s hands-off approach, arguing for stronger state intervention to stimulate employment. “We need a developmental state that actively creates jobs. The private sector alone isn’t solving this,” he said.

The latest data, due this week, will reveal whether South Africa’s labor market has improved or stagnated further. For now, millions—including graduates entering the workforce—remain in limbo.
