The bail application of 27-year-old Monique Kekana, accused of burning down Kelly Smith’s home in Middelpos, Saldanha Bay was postponed to June 27 at the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court. Kekana, arrested on arson charges, was granted bail of R500.

The incident occurred on May 2, shortly after three accused in the disappearance of six-year-old Joslin Smith were convicted of human trafficking and kidnapping in the Western Cape High Court. Emotions ran high in the community, with the state alleging Kekana admitted to torching Smith’s home in a demand for justice.

Kekana, who spent two weeks in custody, expressed relief upon her release but stated she had no regrets, claiming she acted out of fear for children in the community. “I did it because I’m also a mother,” she said, though her lawyer indicated she would plead not guilty.

Kelly Smith, whose whereabouts remain undisclosed by the convicted trio, is reportedly unwelcome in Middelpos. The case continues as the search for Joslin Smith persists.
