
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced the passing of Douglas Gibson, a respected politician and diplomat whose career spanned decades in public service. Gibson, known for his firm leadership and dedication to South Africa, served as the DA’s chief whip and later as South Africa’s ambassador to Thailand.
DA spokesperson Willie Aucamp paid tribute to Gibson, recalling his compassion, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the country. “He was a true South African who dedicated his life to bettering the lives of others,” Aucamp said, highlighting Gibson’s role as a unifying figure in Parliament, respected across party lines.
Gibson entered public service in 1977, becoming a key figure in the DA and its predecessor, the Democratic Party. As chief whip, he was known for his fairness and strong work ethic. His diplomatic service further cemented his legacy as a leader who served with distinction.
Memorial and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days. The DA plans to honor Gibson with a service in Parliament, where he spent much of his career.
Condolences have poured in for his family, friends, and colleagues as South Africa mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant.
