Manhunt launched after gang attacks people at taxi rank in Polokwane

Arrive Alive

The Police in Polokwane have launched a manhunt for a group of armed suspects who attacked people at the Indian Centre Taxi Rank within the Polokwane CBD today.

It is alleged that two taxi associations had a conflict over the operating routes this morning. A group of people arrived in a combi and started to shoot randomly and injured two people. Later this group set a parked taxi alight which burnt to ashes and two of the nearby taxis were partly burnt. The suspects then kidnapped a man and drove away with him but they released him along the way and fled. The situation is calm and POP is busy monitoring the situation.

There were no fatalities and the two injured persons were admitted to hospital with serious injuries. No arrests have been made and cases of malicious damage to property, attempted murder, assault and public violence are still being investigated.

Taxi Associations are advised to resolve conflicts through the legal structures including the Taxi Council and the Department of Transport to address their differences rather than resorting to violence which is putting their clients and ordinary community members in danger.
