Police in Mitchells Plain in Cape Town have arrested three men in three separate incidents for being in possession of an illegal firearm, ammunition, and drugs, Western Cape police said on Saturday.
On Friday night, Mitchells Plain police and the neighbourhood watches of Rocklands and Portland were on routine community mobilisation, which afforded police the opportunity to strengthen and solidifying ties between the community and the South African Police Service (SAPS), Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.
At about 7.15pm the members were patrolling in Beaufort Street, Rocklands, when they noticed a Toyota Quantum with five occupants parked on the side of the road. The members investigated and observed a man walking across the street with a firearm. They approached the man and confiscated a Norinco 9mm pistol with 14 rounds of ammunition.
The 42-year-old man was arrested and would appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition on Monday, Rwexana said.
In an unrelated incident, officers attached to the Mitchells Plain crime prevention unit arrested a 34-year-old man in Kardouw Street, Tafelsig, for illegal possession of ammunition on Friday. Officers were on routine crime prevention patrol duties at about 4.30pm when they “saw the suspect and searched him”. The man dropped a small plastic packet containing six live rounds of R5 ammunition.
He would appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on charges of illegal possession of ammunition on Monday.
Later on Friday afternoon, at about 5.05pm, officers executed a search at a house in Siberian Street, Rocklands, which led to the arrest of a 65-year-old man for possession of drugs. Upon searching the premises, the officers found drugs hidden inside a fridge; 18 Mandrax tablets and 20 “stoppe” dagga (cannabis).
The man would also appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Rwexana said.
