Lectures at the University of KwaZulu-Natal were again suspended at the institution’s five campuses.
In a brief statement issued on Monday morning, university spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said: “University Management has taken a decision to suspend all academic programmes on the five UKZN campuses today, Monday, 22 August. The decision to suspend academic activities was taken in consultation with the SRC and in the best interest of the University.”
He said that lectures would resume on Tuesday.
Lectures were also suspended on Thursday and Friday following protests at the university’s Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses.
Students have been demanding no fee increases for 2017. The protests have been limited to the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses, but the closure affects all the campuses.
Early last week police used rubber bullets to disperse students at the Pietermaritzburg campus and two students were arrested.
Students also staged a protest over poor living conditions last week on Yusuf Dadoo Street (Grey Street) in the centre of Durban, effectively closing it during the morning rush hour.
