On 11 August 2016, Umlazi Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 40-year-old male to life imprisonment for rape.
On 29 April 2012 at about 08:00, the mother of a 7-year-old victim wanted to inspect her daughter’s virginity for safety reasons when the victim informed her that she was raped by the accused several times. She told her mother that the accused who is a relative raped her on several occasions and she could not recall how many times at her home. The case was opened at Amanzimtoti police station and the docket was transferred to Umlazi Family Violence, Child Protection and Family Unit for further investigation that led to the arrest of the accused. The accused appeared several times in court before he was convicted and sentenced.
The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the Umlazi FCS on their dedication in solving the case and sending the rapist to prison indefinitely during the Women’s Month. “We will continue to arrest all men who are abusing our children instead of protecting them. We urge our young girls not to be afraid to report any form of abuse,” she said.
