Sexual assault and drug offenders arrested

South African Police Services

The Sasolburg SAPS says two suspects appeared in the Sasolburg Magistrate’s court this week for dealing in drugs, sexual assault, bribery and attacking a police official. Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Livhuhani Hani, yesterday said in a statement the men were arrested after a 16-year-old complainant on Sunday alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a man in Sasolburg.

The Zamdela FCS unit questioned the complainant thoroughly and found during the investigation that the suspect may be implicated in drug dealing. On Monday the Zamdela FCS unit and the Sasolburg K9 unit tracked the suspect to a flat in Vaalpark near Sasolburg where they found the suspect as well as another man in the company of the suspect.

During the search, police found drugs suspected to be heroin, tik, dagga and crack with a combined estimated value of R10 000. Some of the plastic containing drugs were flushed down the toilet in an attempt to hide the evidence, however, police opened the drain and managed to get the plastic bags out. Hani said one suspect then offered two police officials a plastic bag containing R15 600 in cash if they do not apprehend them, but the officers refused the bribe and arrested the suspects. Hani said when they were taken to the Sasolburg SAPS, one suspect who did not want to be detained violently attacked a police captain and bit him on the hand. On Wednesday, the case against 29-year-old John Okonkwo and 34-year-old Stephans Neyers was postponed at the Sasolburg Magistrate court to August 16 for their bail application.
