Efforts to eradicate drug abuse and trafficking and efforts to prevent it from entering our provincial borders, are yielding excellent results following the hefty sentences that was imposed on drug mules earlier during this week.
Anthony Chike Onwuekwe and Uguchukwu Michael Onyenjuala appeared in the George Regional court on 25 July 2022 where they were sentenced to ten (10) years direct imprisonment and 5-years or R10 000-00 respectively, after being convicted for Dealing in Drugs.
Their sentences stems from their arrests at Maberius Flats in George on 19 April 2018 when members acted on intelligence and seized 169 grams of Tik and 82 grams of Cat that was found in their possession. Both accused were declared unfit to possess a firearm and the drugs was forfeited to the state for disposal.
The successful investigation was conducted by detectives attached to the Provincial Organised Crime’s Narcotics Section based in George.
In another Dealing in Drugs case, related to a bust in Beaufort West dating back to 24 September the 2020, the accused, Minkana Makgobo was slapped with a 16 year direct imprisonment sentence and declared unfit to possess a firearm when she appeared in the Beaufort West Regional court on 28 July 2022.
The court furthermore ruled that in terms of Sec 47 of Act 38 of 2005, that her children be removed from her care.
The accused was arrested on 24 September 2020 when she was found in possession of 6788 Mandrax tablets whilst travelling on a passenger bus en-route to Cape Town. She was convicted on 19 July and sentenced on 28 July 2022 in the Beaufort West Region court. The investigation was successfully conducted by the Provincial Organised Crime’s Narcotics Section based in Beaufort West.
Western Cape Provincial management has commended all the members involved for their dedication and vigilance which led to the arrest and subsequent convictions. The harsh sentences imposed should act as deterrent and warning to other potential mules to rather obey the Laws of our country in being citizens of exemplary stature. This conviction also enhances and demonstrates the trust we have in our judicial system.
