The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile has welcomed the sentence imposed on the 25-year-old accused Gomezgani Banda for the rape of two minors which were perpetrated in August 2020.

The dedication of detectives attached to the Family Violence Child Abuse Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) to bring the accused to book paid off when he was sentenced by the Wynberg Regional Court to an effect 20 years’ imprisonment on two counts of rape on 14 December 2021.

These devious acts were perpetrated in August 2020 when the accused raped two minors aged 8 and 9.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Lt Gen Patekile has also called on the victims of sexual offences to report cases to their nearest police station in order to ensure that evidence is preserved.

“Reporting a case within 72 hours ensures preservation of evidence and gives the victim an opportunity to receive Post Exposure Prophylaxis which assists in the prevention of contracting HIV,” Lieutenant General Patekile.

The FCS unit continues to sustain and enhance working relations with partners such the Departments of Social Development and Health in order to ensure the wellbeing of victims of sexual offences. Victims of sexual offences may contact the GBVF Call Centre for assistance – 0800 428 428.
