The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) in the SAPS, Brigadier Nicky Mills has welcomed the sentences that were handed down to a Kathu man for raping his underage niece.
The uncle sexually groomed his seven-year-old niece by introducing her to pornographic material and raped her several times, between August 2012 and June 2016. The ordeal happened in Mapoteng Village, Kathu.
The parents confronted the victim after noticing strange behaviour from her. She broke the silence about what had happened to her when she was 11-years-old. The uncle was arrested on 28 June 2016 and received bail approximately two years later.
He was sentenced in the Kathu Regional Court on 20 April 2021 and the sentences are as follows:
Count 1 for rape he received life imprisonment.
Count 2 for sexual grooming five years.
Count 3 for showing or exposing pornographic material to a child he received five years direct imprisonment.
Count 4 for rape he was sentenced to another five years.
He was also declared unfit to carry a firearm and his name was entered in the register for sex offenders.
The SAPS management in the Northern Cape also lauds the Investigating Officer D/Sgt Boikanyo Pilane from Kathu FCS for a job well done.
