The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena condemns capturing of a rape incident which went viral on social media platforms.
The condemnation follows circulation of the video depicting a 36-year-old woman with mental illness being allegedly raped on Sunday, 28 March 2021, at Kgale Section, Phokeng outside Rustenburg.
The victim’ sister opened a case after coming across the video and the suspect was successfully traced and arrested on Friday, 16 April 2021 in Phokeng. The suspect aged 36, is expected to appear in the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court in Tlhabane on Monday, 19 April 2021.
Meanwhile, investigation has also been instituted against an unknown person who captured the incident, but instead of reporting to the police, circulated it on social media platforms.
The Provincial Commissioner lauded the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) for their swift response which resulted in the arrest of the suspect.
Furthermore, he urged the public to refrain from circulating the video and to respect the victim’s rights.
