Front National reported a criminal case of vandalism against the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, dr Max Price, at the Cape Town Central Police Station, Buitengracht, Cape Town yesterday. (case nr 453/4/2015)
This is in connection with the proposed removal of the statue of Cecil John Rhodes from the University Campus, following protests by students, claiming that the statue was an insult to black South Africans for reminding them of white achievement, earlier this year.
According to Act 25 of 1999 the Conservation, Protection and Maintenance of National Heritage Resources is the responsibility of the State. The University of Cape Town has no legal right to remove a National Heritage Resource without a process of consultation with the cultural group affected and involved.
If the removal is carried through, the Vice Chancellor will face criminal charges. Front National also called on the Chancellor, mrs Graca Machel-Mandela, as a respected and educated woman, to take a stand on the matter.
