Efforts to eradicate the distribution of drugs into communities and the enforcement of the Level 3 Lockdown regulations yielded positive results when police in the Southern Cape confiscated drugs with an estimated street value of R70 000-00 as well as liquor during crime prevention operations on Monday, 18 January 2021.

Members attached to the Laingsburg police were strategically deployed during a vehicle checkpoint along Voortrekker Street at about 21:50, an entry point into the Western Cape. They pulled over a Mercedes Benz minibus and a search of the vehicle ensued. During the search they found R55 000-00 worth of Tik as well as 300 Mandrax tablets in the possession of a passenger on board. The police confiscated the drugs and arrested a 30-year-old suspect from Britstown on a charge of dealing in drugs.

Meanwhile, another search of a delivery truck at the very same vehicle check point resulted in the confiscation of 61 small bottles (200ml) of liquor hidden in the door panels of his truck and the cabin of the vehicle. The 35-year-old driver was arrested for contravention of the Disaster Management Act regulations.

Furthermore, members attached to the Eden Cluster Crime Combating Team, Conville Crime Prevention Unit assisted by the South African National Defence Force conducted crime prevention operations at Conville, George on 18 January 2020. The group descended on a drug outlet when one of the occupants threw a backpack on the roof of the house. A search of the premises resulted in the discovery of 100 Mandrax tablets and the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect.

All these suspects will appear in court when charged.

Western Cape police management commended the members for their sterling work to bring these perpetrators to book.
