Police manhandling and assaulting a woman in full view of the public

On November 23, 2014, 50 year old Roseline Appolis was assaulted by police. She was allegedly trying to help break up a fight after her daughter was slapped by police. Appolis was then herself arrested, kept in a cell for two days, and then appeared in Court.

This is the reaction from the police…

As sequel to yesterday’s incident where the police were seen on a video manhandling and assaulting a woman in full view of the public, the SAPS management has moved swiftly with the investigation into the matter and found that the members appearing in the footage are indeed stationed in Kraaifontein police station. After police approached the victim yesterday to open a criminal case, the case was indeed registered and it’s receiving our priority in terms of pursuing the necessary investigations.

Subsequent to this, a decision was taken to suspend one of the members immediately as part of the steps management have taken in response to the issue. The matter will also be handed over to the IPID for a further investigation into the incident. The name of the suspended member is 45 year old Sergeant Irvin James Kallie.

We want to reiterate our position as an organisation, that what we saw in the video footage is completely unacceptable within the culture and philosophy of the South Africa Police Service. For this reason, the SAPS as a professional organisation will always ensure that behaviours associated with violating the human rights culture within the organisation are held responsible for their actions. As indicated earlier, a process is currently underway to institute internal disciplinary step against those involved.
