Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema was kicked out of Parliament tonight after he refused to withdraw his statement that the ANC government had killed the miners in Marikana.
National Council of Provinces chairperson Thandi Modise, who was chairing the sitting, said Malema had in effect accused other MPs of murder, and that was unparliamentary.
She also said the statement was not in keeping with the decorum of the house.
Malema said he refused to withdraw. “If the police reduces crime, you say the ANC has reduced crime. But when we say the ANC kills people, then we are told that we can’t,” he said.
Modise said his refusal to withdraw the statement left her with no other option but to kick him out of the house.
All the EFF MPs then got up and left the chamber, pointing umbrellas and shouting to Modise that she herself was premier of the North West when the Marikana incident happened in her province.
ANC MP Nkhensani Kubayi asked if, according to the rules of Parliament, a formal investigation could be established into the EFF’s conduct, and Modise agreed.
