Thunyiwe Gelden Mantyi, 51, appeared at Plettenberg Bay Magistrates Court on the 24 October 2019, soon after her arrest.
Mantyi, a former assistant director at the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, was facing a charge of fraud that exceeded R900 000 which was committed over a period between June 2012 and May 2013.
It is alleged Mantyi was tasked with the responsibility to transfer funds from the said government department to a bank account belonging to George Local Municipality as a conditional grant payment.
The Hawks Commercial Crime Investigation discovered that the funds were redirected to two companies who had no links to the department as they did not provide any service to the state.
Consequently, Nonqaba Myataza, 59 and Zolelwa Myataza, 41, the alleged owners of the two entities that received undue payments were arrested on the 23 September 2019. They appeared at East London Magistrates Court the same day of their arrest and were released on a warning.
The trio is expected to appear together at Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
