The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula has praised police officers who intercepted alleged drug dealers in Margate, putting their lives at risk in the process. “These police officers must be commended for their perseverance in ridding our communities of drugs and their dedication to duty which resulted in them putting their lives on the line to apprehend those that peddle drugs on our streets,” he said.
Police officers from the Provincial Drug and Firearm Task Team had been conducting investigations and were keeping observation on the premises of a suspected drug dealer at Margate on 29 August 2019. Police officers observed a vehicle leaving the premises with two occupants and attempted to pull the vehicle over to confirm their suspicions. The suspects refused to stop and attempted to force the police officers off the road.
Police gave chase and the driver lost control of the vehicle on Shepstone Road where the vehicle overturned. Both men were searched and the passenger was found in possession of five large moons of rock cocaine with a street value of R15,000-00.
The passenger was charged for possession of drugs while the driver was charged for attempted murder as well as reckless and negligent driving. They are both expected to appear at the Ramsgate Magistrates Court soon.
In a follow up operation the police officers proceeded to a house on Humphries Road in Margate. The premises was searched and 44 pieces of rock cocaine, two grams of cocaine powder and four bottles with traces of rock cocaine were seized.
Police investigations are ongoing.
