In celebration of Child Protection Week which commenced on 27 May until 3 June 2019, the Provincial Head of FCS in the Northern Cape, Brigadier Nicky Mills and unit commanders will be distributing Comfort Packs to child rape victims.
Detective Warrant Officer Nelda Lotter, from the Kimberley FCS unit, was invited by the Matla A Bana organisation in Cape Town to form part of the team of police officials and volunteers who decorated and packaged the comfort packs to be distributed to provinces during Child Protection Week.
On the 4 May 2018, the founder member of Matla A Bana organisation, Monique Strydom and Old Mutual played a major role in the opening of the Child Friendly Room at the Kimberley police station.
The facility is utilized by Forensic Social Workers to assess children who have been referred by FCS in order to obtain statements and to conduct forensic assessments.
The comfort packs will be given to child rape victims between the ages of 2 and 12 years old. According to Brig Mills, FCS units in the province will package similar comfort packs with the support of police officials, local businesses and volunteers to be distributed to victims of sexual offences.
