Three males have been arrested and a firearm believed to be the murder weapon confiscated after 54 year old was shot and killed while waiting for his wife in his vehicle at Commando shopping complex in Welkom. More arrests are imminent.

On 10 November 2018 at approximately 17:30, 54 year old Shai Mikia Mohapi was waiting in the car while his wife was busy in the grocery store. The victim was approached by two unknown armed men who shot him several times at point blank and pulled his body out from the vehicle before fleeing in his blue VW Polo with Registration number FT31 DW GP.

The victim died at the scene and his vehicle was later discovered abandoned in Steyn Street Welkom.

In another incident 38 year old Bangladeshi businessman Krishna Dad, was fatally shot after dropping his child at a Creche in Odendaalsrus.

It is alleged that the suspects fired one shot in the direction of the businessman wounding him on the head. The suspects fled in a red mini cooper vehicle after the shooting. The victim was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Moeketsi Sempe launched a 72 hour lockdown operation and assigned a team of investigators on both incidents and the two suspects linked to the Bangladeshi businessman were arrested as well as those linked with the gruesome murder of Mr Shai Mikia Mohapi (54) were arrested and murder weapons seized.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Moeketsi Sempe lauded the teams on a swift action towards the two incidents that shocked the communities in the Matjhabeng area.

“This is what we call stamping the authority of the State at its best. You will be hunted and brought to book in the Free State” said the Provincial Commissioner.

Suspects are to appear in the Welkom and Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court soon.
