Victim stabbed 55 times, 2 gang members get life sentence, Macassar

The determination of a young detective stationed at Macassar police station contributed to two life sentences handed down to Breatley Hartnick and Luciano Saayman for a murder they have committed on the 3rd of April 2016.

The victim was stabbed 55 times by the accused during an apparent altercation between two rival gangs in Macassar.

Every possible lead was pursued, which resulted in the apprehension of seven suspects. However only two were eventually linked to the crime. Not deterred by threats against him and his family, the investigating officer continued with his thorough investigation, securing the life sentences handed down on Tuesday 16 January 2018, in the Somerset west Regional court.

Both accused were also sentenced to three years each for housebreaking, which will run concurrently with the life sentences.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General KE Jula welcomed the sentences and praised the investigating officer for his diligence and dedication towards his work, despite efforts to derail the process.
