On Friday, 1 December 2017, Members from the Uitenhage Cluster are resolute in their efforts to address the root causes of crime and in line with our Back to Basics approach of targeted and informed deployment of resources, members will also continue with their actions to focus on the provincial crime generators such as drugs.
Members from the Uitenhage Cluster followed up on information which led to the arrest of four suspects, aged between 29 and 36 years old.
The suspects were arrested during an intelligence driven operation conducted on Thursday, 30 November 2017 at 06:15 in Tuna Street, Kamesh where a 36 year old male was arrested on a charge of the illegal possession of 700g of dagga, with a street value of R1500-00.
Two suspects (both in their early thirties) were arrested at 08:00 at a supermarket in Van Rooyen Avenue after the suspect was found in possession of eight 9mm rounds of ammunition. They face a charge of illegal possession of ammunition, which was confiscated.
Operations continued towards Olivier Street, Blikkiesdorp, where one male was arrested at 09:00 for being in possession of 24 tik pipes, crystal methamphetamine (tik) and R1 600 cash. The 29-year-old male was arrested on a charge of dealing in tik.
Police visibility will be enhanced during this festive season and SAPS will conduct random stop and search operations and intelligence driven operations to effectively deal with crime generators to ensure that our communities are rid of illegal substances.
The Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll said: “One of these houses was specifically targeted due to the many complaints received from the community to the Community Police Forum as well as the office of the Uitenhage cluster commander and the respective station commander. Occupants from this house, engage openly in drug activities and police vehicles used to drive pass this particular drug post and the owner seemed to act with impunity. For a police official to drive past a drug post without acting, is giving the impression that SAPS are condoning such action”.
“In addition, the drug owners openly bragged to community members about the profitability of drugs”. “SAPS needed to act and the Asset and Forfeit Unit will also be activated to address gains and purchases stemming from the drug means”. “During this festive season there will be a clamp down on all drug outlets as many as the crime reported stems from these drug posts”.
The suspects will appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on the various charges on Monday, 4 December 2017.
The South African Police Service wants to encourage the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime and they appeal to the community to provide valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects involved in crime.
