Young girl dies after being raped in India
No to rape.

A 14-year-old girl from the Dalit, or lower-caste,
community died in India after being allegedly raped by the same man
twice, police said Tuesday.

The victim succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in north Delhi at
the weekend, days after a similar case was reported from the
neighbouring state of Haryana.

The teenager was kidnapped from her home in Burari area in May by her
neighbour who had also attacked her in December, local police chief
Satbir Singh said.

“The girl’s parents have alleged that the 20-year-old man tortured
her and forced her to drink corrosive chemicals which caused her
death,” Singh said. “We have re-arrested the man. We are awaiting the
medical reports, following which he may face murder charges as well”.

There was outrage in India last week after a 21-year-old Dalit
student in Haryana was gang-raped by five men who had raped her three
years ago. An the weekend, an Israeli tourist was gang-raped in the
hill-resort state of Himachal Pradesh.

Women’s rights groups including the Delhi Commission of Women have
slammed federal authorities for not doing enough to curb sexual
crimes and ensure the safety of women in the country.

India has been in the spotlight in recent years over sexual violence
against women. In 2012, the fatal gang rape of a student on a bus in
New Delhi led to a massive public outcry and tougher laws. However,
activists say little has changed in attitudes towards sexual assault.
