The disaster began on Wednesday when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck approximately 160 kilometers west of the capital city of Caracas. Less than a minute later, the region was hit by a second, even stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor. The back-to-back seismic events devastated areas in and around Caracas, damaging hundreds of buildings and destroying critical infrastructure, which has severely disrupted basic services across several states.
As of Thursday, the human toll continues to mount. Hundreds of individuals remain trapped under the rubble, with many more still unaccounted for. In response to the vast devastation and tragedy, the Venezuelan government has officially declared a state of emergency to facilitate ongoing rescue operations.
Addressing the crisis, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will provide substantial aid to the country. During his remarks, Trump highlighted the massive scale of the disaster in Caracas and pledged American support to help the nation recover. He also touched upon broader regional and economic dynamics, claiming the US “took over Venezuela in less than one day” to ensure that “the oil is flowing.” Trump emphasized his administration’s commitment to the country’s recovery and noted that they are also supporting local farmers, observing that they are “very smart” for choosing to stay on their agricultural land rather than moving into the big cities.
On the global stage, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep sadness over the profound loss of life and widespread destruction. The UN system is working closely with the Venezuelan government and international partners to coordinate a comprehensive relief response. Specifically, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is facilitating the rapid deployment of specialized urban search and rescue teams to the affected zones.
Secretary-General Guterres warmly welcomed the offers of solidarity and support pouring in from member states during this critical time. International assistance is mobilizing rapidly, with incoming urban search and rescue teams arriving from various countries alongside multiple offers of aid from across the region and beyond. Echoing this global commitment, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher released a statement confirming that humanitarian partners are fully mobilized and dedicated to supporting the people of Venezuela through this unprecedented crisis.
