Trump to Build Relations With Russia Based on US Interests- Ex-Homeland Security Secretary

Newly elected US president Donald Trump will be guided by the interests of the United States in be relationship with Russia, regardless of the statements he made during his campaign, former US Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff told Sputnik.

“First of all, Trump must and will be guided by the interests of the United States. US has long-standing relations which are not just empty commitments,” Chertoff said, when asked on how the US-Russian relations would develop under Trump’s administration.

The Republican Party candidate Donald Trump won 290 Electoral College votes in the November 8 presidential election, prevailing over his Democratic Party opponent Hillary Clinton, who secured 228 votes.

During his campaign, Trump drew criticism from the US media because of his seemingly favorable view of Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump reportedly claimed that he and Putin would “get along well” and that the improvement of the US-Russian relationship would be “a tremendous thing.”
