U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing a steep 25% additional tariff on India, raising the total levy to 50% in response to New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian oil. The new tariff, set to take effect in 21 days, escalates tensions between the two nations amid already strained trade relations.
In the order, Trump stated that India was “directly or indirectly” importing Russian crude, prompting the punitive measure. The move comes as part of the Trump administration’s broader economic pressure campaign, which has also targeted other nations, including South Africa, over trade and geopolitical disputes.
India Defiant, Vows to Protect National Interests
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued his first public response, declaring that India would “prioritize the interest of its farmers” and was prepared to “pay a heavy price” rather than concede to U.S. demands. The statement is seen as a direct reference to stalled trade talks between the two countries, which collapsed over India’s refusal to allow increased American agricultural imports.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned the tariffs as “unreasonable and unjustified,” arguing that other major buyers of Russian oil—such as China—have not faced similar penalties. Officials also pointed out that the U.S. had previously encouraged India to purchase Russian crude under the Biden administration to stabilize global oil prices.
BRICS Nations May Unite Against U.S. Pressure
Analysts suggest the tariff hike could push India closer to BRICS allies, including China, Russia, and Brazil. Reports indicate that Brazil is considering convening a BRICS meeting to discuss collective responses to Trump’s trade policies.
In a significant geopolitical shift, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit China later this month—his first trip in seven years—amid efforts to reset relations following a deadly border standoff. India’s National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval, is also currently in Moscow, where discussions on expanding Russian oil imports are reportedly underway.
Global Implications
The U.S. tariffs have raised concerns beyond India, with South Africa also facing impending levies. Observers speculate that the Trump administration is targeting BRICS nations as part of a broader strategy to reshape global trade dynamics.
Experts warn that instead of coercing India into compliance, the tariffs may accelerate New Delhi’s pivot toward alternative trade partners in Asia and the Global South. “This could redefine geopolitics in ways Trump may not have intended,” said one analyst.
As the 21-day deadline approaches, the standoff signals a deepening rift between two nations once considered strategic allies—with far-reaching consequences for global trade and diplomacy.
