Bangkok – Thai authorities on Saturday arrested a suspect in connection with a Bangkok bombing that killed 20 people on August 17 2015, according to local media reports.
A task force of police and army personnel apprehended a 28-year-old Turkish suspect in an apartment in the Nong-Jok area of Bangkok around noon on Saturday, according to Khaosod Newspaper.
Police also found bomb making material in the apartment, the report said.
Police spokesperson Prawut Thavornsiri told dpa that an operation “was under way” in the area, but failed to give further details.
Anthony Davis, a regional security analyst with IHS-Jane’s, speaking at a forum earlier in the week, said that the Bangkok bombing did not fit the pattern of attack of local and regional groups.
Davis added that the most likely group to have carried out the attack is a far-right Turkish organisation known as the Grey Wolves. Davis said that the motive for such an attack could be the repatriation of Uigher refugees to China by the Thai government.
A bombing in Bangkok on August 17 left 20 dead and more than 130 wounded. Many of the dead and injured were ethnic Chinese.
