Denver police are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred in broad daylight on Thursday afternoon near Curtis Park in the Five Points neighborhood, just outside downtown.
The incident took place around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of 32nd and Arapahoe streets by the park, an area where many families and children live and play.
According to Denver Police Department statements shared on X, officers responded to the scene where one person was shot and later pronounced dead. The department confirmed that a suspect was quickly taken into custody.
Denver Police spokesperson information detailed that 22-year-old Kaylen Stroter was arrested in connection with the murder. He faces charges of first-degree murder. Police did not immediately disclose whether he is a resident of the neighborhood. Details about the victim are expected to be released later by the coroner’s office.
Residents in the area expressed shock at the violence occurring so close to homes and a community park frequented by children. One mother told reporters she was extremely concerned for her kids due to the proximity of the incident to her home, saying she saw reports and thought, “Oh my gosh, there’s no way this is happening right now in broad daylight when there’s kids outside.”
The shooting follows another fatal incident over the weekend in the Cole neighborhood near City Park on Easter Sunday, adding to concerns about ongoing violence in Denver neighborhoods.
The investigation remains active. Denver Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting near 32nd Street to contact the department.
