WINTERTHUR, Switzerland — Swiss authorities have arrested a suspect following a stabbing attack at a train station in Winterthur, near Zurich, that injured three people and was characterized by officials as an act of terrorism.
The suspect, identified as a 31-year-old Swiss-Turkish national, was taken into custody after the incident. The three victims are aged 28, 43, and 52.
Cantonal rescue services received an emergency alert at 8:28 reporting a person injured by a knife, with initial information indicating one victim approximately 40 years old and the attacker at large. Emergency response teams were deployed immediately, and Winterthur police arrived at the station with two units. Officers subsequently discovered three injured individuals at the scene.
While investigators continue to examine the suspect’s motives, authorities have publicly labeled the assault a terrorist act. Officials also noted that the suspect has a documented history of psychological problems.
“A terrible act of terrorism which the police handled very well,” stated a cantonal spokesperson. “It was a situation where it was possible to prevent even greater harm. But we take this very seriously indeed. It really does undermine people’s sense of security in this canton every single time.”
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos at the station during the attack, with people screaming and running as the suspect moved through the area wielding a knife.
Police confirmed the arrest and stated that the investigation into the terror attack remains ongoing.
