The Russian Navy has hit 11 targets in Syria from ships in the Caspian Sea, almost 1 500km away, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu says.
All of the targets, which included the terrorist organisation Islamic State (ISIS), were destroyed without any civilian casualties reported, he told President Vladimir Putin, according to state news agency RIA Novosti.
This is the first news of Russia using its navy in its Syria campaign since it began bombing Islamic State and other extremist militants last week at the behest of the Syrian government.
Four ships in Russia’s Caspian Fleet fired a total of 26 cruise missiles at the targets, the report says. The missiles passed over Iran and Iraq, according to state-funded news channel RT.
