Miami, Florida – As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, world-renowned chef Robert Irvine is redefining the classic July 4 BBQ while using the milestone to honor military veterans. In a recent interview, the British-born culinary expert opened up about his upcoming television special, “American Kitchen: An America 250 BBQ,” and his collaborative charitable efforts to give back to those who have served the country.

The highly anticipated project, set to release this Friday, is designed to celebrate the nation’s semiquincentennial by highlighting patriotic foods on the grill. Throughout the special, Irvine features a cast of active-duty personnel and veterans, including Marines, Navy sailors, Air Force members, and firefighters. He described these service members as the absolute “epitome of excellence” and offered a heartfelt message of gratitude for their service. “Freedom is not free,” Irvine emphasized, noting that the country’s celebrations are only possible because of their profound sacrifices.

Despite being an Englishman, Irvine playfully defended his expertise in American barbecue, jokingly claiming that the English actually brought beef to America back in 1776. When pressed to define the quintessential American Independence Day menu, he pointed to the traditional staples: barbecue, hamburgers, and hot dogs. However, he acknowledged that the modern grill has evolved significantly. Today, an American BBQ can feature almost anything, including shredded chicken burgers—though when asked if salmon made the cut, he quickly joked, “No fish.”

Reflecting on his personal journey, Irvine shared that while he is British by birth, he actively chose to become an American. He expressed a deep love for his adopted country, highlighting the incredible culture of reciprocity and the amazing ways America supports its people and those who protect it.

That spirit of giving back extends directly into Irvine’s philanthropy. He is currently partnering with the rock band O.A.R. to raise funds for the Robert Irvine Foundation. Irvine shared a humorous anecdote about first discovering the group, admitting, “I didn’t know what or who… let’s not go there.” However, after meeting them, he fell in love with their music and decided to get involved.

The band is currently embarking on their July tour, which Irvine has sponsored to ensure veterans can attend the live shows. The experience doesn’t end when the music stops; attendees are also treated to an exclusive dinner with Irvine and the band members. Ultimately, the initiative is focused on raising crucial funds to support veterans right in Irvine’s home state of Florida.
