U.S. military forces carried out targeted strikes in southern Iran today in response to imminent threats against American personnel, according to Capt. Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for U.S. Central Command.
The operation, described as an act of self-defense, focused on disabling missile launch infrastructure and intercepting Iranian vessels engaged in mine-laying activities. “U.S. forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” Hawkins confirmed. “Targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to emplace mines. U.S. Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire.”
The military action unfolds against a backdrop of diplomatic uncertainty. While negotiations between Washington and Tehran appeared to gain momentum over the weekend, recent statements have introduced new ambiguity. President Donald Trump, communicating via Truth Social, indicated that while progress had been made, there was “no rush” to conclude an agreement.
At the heart of the stalled discussions remains the handling of Iran’s nuclear materials. President Trump specified that enriched uranium and related nuclear components must “either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or preferably in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or at another acceptable location with the Atomic Energy Commission or its equivalent being witness to this event.”
The timing of the strikes—occurring on Memorial Day—adds a layer of complexity to an already delicate geopolitical moment. Regional observers note that while diplomatic channels remain open, the military response signals continued vigilance by U.S. forces operating in the area.
U.S. Central Command reiterated its dual commitment: to ensure the safety of American service members and to uphold restraint consistent with the current ceasefire framework. As developments continue to unfold, officials emphasize that defensive measures will remain calibrated to the evolving threat environment.
