One person is dead and 30 others have been injured
after two bombs exploded in the southern Thai province of Pattani,
local media reported on Wednesday.

The first bomb, which was detonated at 10.40pm (15:40 GMT) on Tuesday
outside a pub and karaoke bar, caused no casualties.

A second car bomb exploded at 11pm, killing one person and injuring
30 others, Internal Security Operations Command spokesman Yuthanam
Petmouang told broadcaster Spring News.

The second bomb was designed “to maximize casualties,” Yuthanam said.

Earlier this month a series of bombings across central and southern
Thailand left four people dead and more than 30 injured.

Police said they could not yet make a connection between those
attacks and Tuesday night’s bombings.

Since 2004, an insurgent movement to create an independent state in
Thailand’s three southern Muslim-majority provinces has resulted in
6,200 deaths and 11,000 people injured.
