China’s foreign ministry confirmed on Friday that a hostage taken by terrorist group Islamic State was a Chinese citizen.
The group on Wednesday posted photos of two men wearing yellow prison clothing on its online magazine Dabiq.
The magazine referred to the Chinese man as Fan Jinghui, 50, from Beijing. The other was identified Norwegian Ole Johan Grimsgaard-Ofstad, 48.
China’s foreign ministry confirmed at a Friday press conference that the hostage was a Chinese citizen, without giving further details.
“There has been a preliminary verification of the hostage information released by an extremist organisation,” a ministry spokesperson said.
“The characteristics of the hostage matched with a profile of Chinese citizens missing overseas. China has carried out the relevant work and reiterated its strong opposition to any violence against innocent civilians,” he said.
