WASHINGTON — A growing faction of House conservatives, spearheaded by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, is refusing to advance any Senate-passed legislation until the Save America Act and strict Voter ID requirements are enacted. The Florida congresswoman argues that election integrity and citizenship verification must be finalized before lawmakers consider other legislative priorities, setting up a major procedural standoff on Capitol Hill.

At the center of the current friction is a recently signed housing bill that has garnered unexpected support from a number of Democrats. While President Donald Trump signed the legislation and reportedly agrees with Luna’s stance on election security, the congresswoman heavily criticized the housing package. She described it as a flawed piece of legislation burdened by excessive government spending that fails to address the root causes of the affordability crisis.

Luna noted that she was the original champion of legislation aimed at prohibiting corporations from purchasing single-family homes, but she argued the current bill is a “back room” deal that misses the mark. Specifically, she pointed out that the legislation fails to include necessary tax cuts or inflation indexing for capital gains. She highlighted the financial strain this places on empty-nesters who have owned their homes for four decades but now face unaffordable $500,000 capital gains tax liabilities.

The pushback from the House Freedom Caucus and allied conservatives is substantial. Luna revealed that more than two dozen House members have firmly stated they will not vote on any legislation sent over by the Senate unless it includes robust Voter ID and citizenship verification measures. She accused House leadership of attempting backroom negotiations to suspend procedural rules, arguing they are doing so because the Senate is incapable of passing the election reforms in their current form.

While Luna praised Speaker Mike Johnson for being sympathetic to a pro-growth budget, she stressed that the Senate’s inaction remains the primary obstacle. Senate leadership is reportedly attempting to pass the election reforms through the budget reconciliation process to bypass a filibuster. However, Luna argued that this procedural path is unworkable without fundamentally altering Senate rules.

Achieving this, she noted, would require the Senate to remove the parliamentarian and formally embrace the removal of the filibuster—steps that many senators are highly reluctant to take. Luna pointed to Senator Mike Lee and other colleagues who have gone on the record stating they will not support the reconciliation workaround, leaving the House with no choice but to hold its ground.

Despite the legislative gridlock, Luna emphasized that the public is overwhelmingly on the side of the House conservatives. She cited polling indicating that 80% of the country supports the Voter ID and citizenship bill. She compared the political resistance to the Save America Act to Congress’s historical reluctance to ban insider trading, suggesting that establishment figures in both parties are unwilling to enact policies the public demands simply because it disrupts the status quo.

Looking toward the upcoming midterm elections, which she described as a “pressure cooker” for lawmakers, Luna warned about the rising political influence of the Democratic Socialists of America. She pointed to their recent electoral victories in New York and criticized their platform, which she said advocates for mass amnesty and citizenship for undocumented immigrants, alongside aggressive rhetoric focused on taxing the wealthy and redistributing wealth.

Reaffirming her commitment to her constituents, Luna stated that election security remains the paramount issue for the American people. She vowed to continue fighting for the Save America Act, making it clear that without a definitive, bulletproof plan to pass these reforms, House conservatives will not cooperate with the Senate’s current legislative strategy.
