A senior Hamas delegation was in Egypt on Sunday for talks regarding a potential ceasefire agreement in Gaza, even as both Israel and the militant group exchanged accusations of violating the existing truce.
The negotiations, which are being mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, come amid a fragile diplomatic backdrop. In an official statement, Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the first phase of the proposed agreement.
However, the talks were immediately overshadowed by military actions and counter-claims. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) killed five senior Hamas members. He claimed this action was in response to a Hamas fighter being sent into Israeli-controlled territory within Gaza.
In a significant escalation elsewhere, Israel claimed responsibility for an airstrike in Beirut that killed a senior Hezbollah leader. The strike on the Lebanese capital resulted in at least four fatalities and injured close to two dozen people.
The situation on the ground in Gaza remains tense, with civilians reporting ongoing violence despite the discussions of a ceasefire. The conflicting narratives from both sides and the recent deadly strikes cast a shadow over the prospects for a durable peace, as international mediators continue their efforts to broker a deal.
