Former White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley praised Elon Musk’s tenure on a government oversight committee, claiming the billionaire entrepreneur exposed widespread misuse of taxpayer dollars before his recent departure.
Speaking to Sky News Australia, Gidley credited Musk with uncovering “a lot of fraud, waste, and abuse” in federal spending, including billions misallocated to “ridiculous programs” over decades.
“Misspending, misusing the American tax dollar to the tune of billions—he exposed it, and now Congress has the opportunity to root it out,” Gidley said. He alleged that funds were disproportionately funneled to left-wing initiatives while conservative causes, such as pro-Second Amendment or pro-life groups, were excluded.
Musk’s Revelations and Congressional Action
Gidley claimed Musk’s efforts revealed financial mismanagement that even Congress struggled to access, including missing USAID numbers and funds diverted to obscure foreign projects. “Now Congress has the ability to codify those cuts into law,” he said, preventing future administrations from easily reinstating funding.
The former Trump official also cited Social Security as an area of abuse, with payments allegedly going to deceased individuals or those erroneously listed. While Musk’s exposure of these issues was critical, Gidley stressed that legislative follow-up is necessary to enact lasting reform.
Musk’s Parting Criticism of Trump
Musk’s exit was marked by criticism of former President Donald Trump’s economic policies, particularly his signature “big, beautiful bill.” Gidley downplayed the remarks, suggesting Musk would now be “more vocal” as a private citizen but defended Trump’s approach, arguing that proposed spending cuts couldn’t be included in the bill due to Senate procedural rules.
He also dismissed concerns about deficits, citing economic growth and tariff revenues as overlooked factors, while accusing the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) of partisan bias.
Trump’s Tariffs Reinstated
The interview closed on breaking news: an appeals court reinstated Trump’s global tariffs after a temporary block. Gidley framed the decision as a win for fairness, echoing Trump’s campaign themes. “If they put a 20% tariff on us, it stands to reason we could put a 20% tariff on them,” he said.
What’s Next?
Gidley predicted Musk’s findings would lead to a “massive restructuring” of federal spending, with Congress poised to act. As debates over fiscal responsibility and tariffs continue, the impact of Musk’s brief government stint remains a focal point in Washington.
