Republican Donald Trump shocks the world to become the next president of the United States, the Associated Press projects.
Trump secured the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency and beat Democrat Hillary Clinton, who had been seen as widely favoured ahead of Tuesday’s vote, the news agency reported.
Voters in the US industrial heartland pushed longstanding Democratic states into Trump’s column in a race that was far closer than analysts had predicted.
Trump won major swing states, including Ohio, Florida and North Carolina.
